Step 1. Shut off electrical power
We all know that water and electricity are a dangerous combination. Trying to resolve a water leak in close proximity to electrical wiring or devices is extremely dangerous. So before you do anything else, switch off the electricity at the fusebox for your safety.
Step 2. Prevent water damage
Depending on the extent of the water leak, you may be able to prevent some water damage. Get a large bucket or container (or two so you can swap them when emptying one) and place it under the leak if possible. Otherwise brooming and mopping water can reduce it’s spread.
Step 3. Turn off the water supply
The water leak will continue until it’s fixed or the water source is cut off. The main water shutoff valve is usually found in your front yard or on the front of your house with your water meter. If you have help, it’s a good idea to send one person to the water meter while the other prevents water damage in step 2.
Step 4. Call A Plumber!
Now, that the water supply is off and water damage is being minimised, it’s time to call a local emergency plumber to repair the water leak. A good plumber will not only make repairs but identify the cause of the water leak so it doesn’t happen again.
Step 5. Drain the pipes
Even if you’ve turned the water supply off, there is still water in your pipework. Drain the water away safely by turning on all your taps. This means less water flooding your floor and less time for the plumber to complete his work.
